Wyatt’s Take

  • The Senate confirmed Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security in a 54-45 vote.
  • The department remains under pressure from a funding freeze and ongoing fights over immigration policy.
  • Republicans backed the move as a step toward stronger border enforcement, while some Democrats and a few Republicans opposed it.

The Senate officially confirmed Senator Markwayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security on Monday. This move puts a fighter in charge of our borders as the department faces a funding freeze and internal pushback.

Mullin is stepping into a department currently overseeing TSA and FEMA while workers go without paychecks. Republicans see this as a necessary change to finally enforce our laws and protect the heartland.

Senator John Cornyn praised the choice, saying Mullin will lead with determination.

“As a conservative warrior with a proven track record of supporting President Trump’s agenda, Markwayne Mullin will lead the Department of Homeland Security with dogged determination and zeal for enforcing our nation’s immigration laws,” Cornyn stated.

He also noted that a strong hand is needed while Democrats hold agency funding hostage during a time of heightened danger.

Not everyone was happy with the vote, as some Republicans joined Democrats in opposition.

Senator Jacky Rosen criticized the pick, claiming Mullin is too focused on the President’s priorities. She argued that his past votes against certain funding measures made him unfit for the role.

Wyatt Matters

Middle America deserves a secure border and a government that puts its own citizens first. Having a plainspoken leader at DHS is a solid step toward restoring the rule of law in our communities.
