January 1, Harris to Attend Inauguration of Socialist Honduran President
Vice President Kamala Harris is attending the inauguration of the democratic socialist Honduran President-elect Xiomara Castro.
Harris has kept in contact with Castro since her election victory. Last month, she took a call to “deepen the partnership between the United States and Honduras,” said Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary for the vice president.
Castro is not only the first leader in Honduras’ history to win an election on a socialist platform, but she’s also the first woman to be president of the Central American country.
Castro’s husband, former Honduran President Mel Zelaya, who was deposed from his role by a military coup in 2009, was her campaign manager. Zelaya is a controversial figure in Honduran politics, having been ousted after trying to mirror the policies of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.
The delegation for Castro’s inauguration, led by Harris, includes U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Samantha Power, Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA), the State Department’s Jose Fernandez and Brian Nichols, and Colleen Hoey, the charge d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa.
