January 1, Half-destroyed Banksy artwork could nab over $5 million at auction
A piece of Banksy artwork that self-shredded right after it sold for $1.4 million is for sale again, this time with a much higher price tag.
Auctioneer Sotheby’s said that “Love is in the Bin” will be for sale in London on Oct. 14. The pre-sale estimate is between $5.5 million to $8.3 million.
The work was originally known as “Girl With Balloon.” When an anonymous buyer made the winning bid at Sotheby’s back in 2018, a hidden shredder embedded in the frame activated, leaving half of the canvas shredded to bits.
“Love is in the Bin was born of the most spectacular artistic happening of the 21st century,” said Alex Branczik, Sotheby’s chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art. “When ‘Girl With Balloon’ ‘self-destructed’ in our saleroom, Banksy sparked a global sensation that has since become a cultural phenomenon.”
