A tragic crash outside a Savannah police precinct took the life of Hesse K-8 teacher Linda Davis on Monday. Police said Oscar Vasquez Lopez, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, refused to pull over for ICE agents and tried to escape, smashing his car into Davis’s vehicle.

Davis died at the hospital, while Lopez was treated for minor injuries. Lopez had an order of removal since 2024 but still chose to run instead of complying with law enforcement.

Some on social media are putting the blame on ICE, with one post claiming, “Linda Davis was killed by ICE today. A Black woman, a beloved teacher, killed by ICE in Savannah, Georgia.”

But the facts show Lopez is responsible for fleeing and causing the deadly crash. Police reports confirm ICE was lawfully attempting to stop him when he sped off, putting everyone on the road at risk.

Another added, “Correct headline: an illegal immigrant murdered an American citizen while fleeing from law enforcement.”

Calls to blame law enforcement ignore the danger of criminals evading police on public roads. Even if there was no prior criminal record, running from officers is a felony and leads to tragedies just like this.

“So you believe that fleeing and evading law enforcement (felony) doesn’t endanger everyone on the road?”

The reality is, enforcing immigration laws keeps American communities safe. Refusing to cooperate only leads to more danger and heartache at the local level.
