January 1, Georgia Early Voter Turnout Breaks Records Amid Harris and Trump Battle
In a stunning show of civic engagement, more than a quarter of Georgia’s voters have already made their voices heard in the 2024 presidential election. Georgia, a key battleground state, is smashing turnout records with over 1.8 million of its 7.2 million active voters participating in absentee or early voting.
This surge in early voting underscores the importance of Georgia as a hotly contested state in the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. With significant time and resources invested by both camps, it’s clear that the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Gabriel Sterling from the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office lauded this participation milestone, reflecting the robust engagement from the citizens of the Peach State. This level of turnout is especially impressive with nine more days left for early voting.
In the 2020 election, Georgia was a pivotal state, captured by President Biden by a razor-thin margin. Fast forward to today, voters seem more energized than ever. On the first day of early voting alone, over 313,000 ballots were cast in-person, setting an all-time high record and representing a 123% increase from previous records.
Demographics of early voters include a majority of White voters, with Black voters close behind. Interestingly, women are outpacing men in early voting, weighing in at 55.3% compared to 44.4%.
In what promises to be a critical week, both Harris and Trump will make appearances in Georgia to rally their supporters. Harris, accompanied by former President Barack Obama, will be in Atlanta, while Trump will engage with voters at a religious event in rural Georgia before heading to a rally in Duluth.
As other states like North Carolina and South Carolina also report record-breaking early voter turnout, the momentum for an intense, high-stakes election is undeniable. The real question remains: will the people’s choice reflect a return to the policies of the Trump administration, or will the status quo prevail? Stay tuned as this thrilling race unfolds.
