Wyatt’s Take

  • Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann surrendered to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office after a probation violation warrant.
  • Authorities say the case stems from her prior DUI conviction and a disputed positive screening.
  • Heitmann says she remains innocent and that later private tests came back clean.

A Florida mayor found herself back in handcuffs after authorities said she violated probation tied to a prior DUI case. Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann surrendered to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office after a warrant was issued for her arrest.

The mayor had previously pleaded no contest to a DUI charge involving a blood-alcohol content of 0.15 or higher.

Her probation required her to stay away from alcohol and submit to random drug screenings to keep her seat.

“The test returned a result I disputed immediately,” Heitmann stated regarding the initial positive result.

She claims she even tried to turn herself in early, but the system was not ready to process her. The mayor says she will not let the situation define her career.

“I did not resist,” she wrote about the surrender.

“I did not hide. I showed up — because that is what I have always done.”

Her attorney argued that two other samples collected shortly after the incident showed no illegal substances in her system.

However, the warrant became active, and the city official had to face the music in front of the community.
