Federal Judge Rules Against Stacey Abrams
U.S. District Judge Mark Cohen rejected a bid from Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams (D), ruling that her fundraising committee isn’t yet allowed to take in unlimited contributions.
Abrams had filed a lawsuit last month requesting that her committee, One Georgia, be allowed to raise unlimited funds because she’s essentially already the Democratic nominee for governor.
But Cohen said that Abrams can’t be considered her party’s nominee because the primary hasn’t happened yet.
In his decision, Cohen wrote that allowing One Georgia to raise unlimited amounts of funds ahead of the primary would “effectively rewrite” the law.
The state’s gubernatorial primaries are set for May 24.
