• While New York delays its own reparations study until 2029, the DOJ is already suing similar programs as unconstitutional — proving even the federal government knows this is illegal race-grifting.

A far-left civil rights organization is now demanding statewide reparations in New York, claiming the state owes Black residents cash payments because of wealth disparities they say stem from slavery and systemic racism. Working New Yorkers — who never owned slaves and are barely scraping by themselves — would be forced to foot the bill.

“Reparations are a debt that is owed. Enslaved Black people built the foundation of New York’s economy, but Black families in our state still face racism that has been codified into our laws and budgets,” said Lanessa Owens-Chaplin, Director of the Racial Justice Center at the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU).

“New York State was not a bystander to slavery — it created, enacted, and protected the institution. Reparations must be extended to all Black New Yorkers descended from those enslaved by New York State, and to all Black New Yorkers still living under the systems slavery built.”

The NYCLU and the Legal Defense Fund released a report last week titled “The Other New York: The Legacy of Slavery and the Case for Reparations Now.” The document claims to detail the lasting economic impacts of slavery and Jim Crow policies on Black communities across New York.

According to the report, the median wealth of Black New Yorkers stands at $18,870 — nearly 15 times less than the median wealth of White New Yorkers at $276,900. The groups say New York exhibits a wider racial wealth gap than the national average.

What the report conveniently ignores: decades of Democrat control in New York’s cities, the collapse of the Black family under welfare-state policies, skyrocketing crime that Democrats refuse to prosecute, and a public school system that fails Black children while funneling billions to teachers’ unions. Instead, activists blame practices like “redlining” from nearly a century ago.

“Nearly 90 years after redlining and urban renewal, formerly redlined communities remain some of the highest-poverty neighborhoods in New York,” the report states.

“Zoning laws reinforced the racial hierarchy established under slavery, forcing Black people to live in industrial areas with increased pollution — leading to disproportionately high asthma, cardiovascular disease, premature delivery, and premature death. Schools serving predominantly Black students have been severely underfunded and disproportionately affected by environmental hazards, crumbling infrastructure, and lead poisoning.”

The groups argue that reparations must include direct cash compensation and sweeping institutional policy changes. Translation: massive wealth redistribution based solely on race, paid for by taxpayers of all colors who had nothing to do with slavery.

“Supporting reparations is about more than compensation; it is about acknowledging harm, restoring dignity, and creating pathways for communities to thrive,” the authors wrote.

The report outlines proposed remedies to “compensate for the harm by addressing tangible losses, such as loss of wealth, wages, and other damages caused by wrongdoing,” while also targeting broader structural changes in criminal justice, environmental policy, and public school funding.

“In order to build a thriving economy and a resilient multi-racial democracy, New York must repair past harm and break down barriers to opportunity for Black communities. Reparations benefit all New Yorkers,” the report urged.

Except they don’t. Race-based handouts violate the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause — a fact the Department of Justice has already recognized in federal court.

In Evanston, Illinois — the first U.S. city to distribute cash and housing grants as reparations — the program is now facing a high-profile federal lawsuit. The DOJ intervened in the suit, arguing that race-based benefit distributions violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

That means even the Biden-era Justice Department admitted these schemes are unconstitutional. And if liberals can’t defend it in court, you know it’s a legal disaster.

Meanwhile, in New York, progress on state-level recommendations has completely stalled. The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies was created under legislation signed by Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in late 2023.

The panel was tasked with examining the state’s historical ties to slavery and modern economic disparities to formulate recommendations for policy changes and financial remedies. But the NYCLU slammed state officials after a provision quietly embedded in the state budget pushed the commission’s final report deadline back two years — from 2025 to 2029.

In other words, even New York Democrats know this is political poison. So they’re kicking the can down the road and hoping voters forget.

Why It Matters

This isn’t about healing or justice — it’s about dividing Americans by race and forcing hardworking families to pay for crimes they didn’t commit. Real solutions for struggling communities come from strong families, safe streets, quality education, and economic opportunity — not government checks based on skin color. Reparations schemes are unconstitutional, unaffordable, and un-American.
