January 1, Elon Musk Challenges Trump’s Tariff Strategy

Over the weekend and into Monday, Elon Musk, the billionaire who owns the platform X, had a lot to say about President Trump’s tariffs. Tariffs are like taxes on things we buy and sell from other countries, and Trump thinks they help us. But Musk doesn’t agree.

Musk posted on X that he’s not a fan of the folks who came up with how to use these tariffs. He even poked fun at one of Trump’s advisors, Peter Navarro, who went to a fancy school called Harvard. Musk basically said that sometimes being super smart might make you think you know everything when you don’t.

Navarro fired back, saying Musk just wants to protect his car business. That makes sense, right? Business folks like Musk want to keep the prices of their products low, so they make more money.

Musk also made a joke about tariffs on some islands with penguins. He thinks it’s silly!

Musk believes that the U.S. and Europe should agree not to put taxes on each other’s stuff at all. That way, people can work freely between these places, and things would be cheaper for everybody.

On Monday, Musk shared a video of a really smart guy named Milton Friedman. Friedman was against tariffs too. He talked about a simple pencil and how many people from all over the world help make it without even talking to each other. This shows how trade connects us and makes things work better.

Friedman once said tariffs make things cost more for the people buying them, like moms and dads shopping for the family. When we buy from others, they should also buy from us, not just us sending things out and getting less back.

President Trump, though, still thinks tariffs are great, even if they make the market a bit crazy. He says someday everyone will see how good they are for America!
