January 1, Elite Ivy League School REVERSES Woke Admissions Policy After Major Failure

Wyatt’s Take
- Columbia University just admitted what conservatives knew all along — standardized tests actually measure student ability and readiness
- After years of pushing ‘equity’ over merit, the Ivy League school is bringing back mandatory SAT requirements
- This reversal exposes how far-left admissions experiments hurt students while elite universities played politics with America’s future
Columbia University has made a stunning reversal on its admissions policy, reinstating mandatory SAT requirements after years of treating standardized tests like they were racist relics. The elite Ivy League institution finally admitted what working Americans have known all along: test scores are actually a “useful indicator” of whether students can handle college-level work.
The about-face comes after universities across the country jumped on the woke bandwagon, ditching objective measures of academic ability in favor of subjective “holistic” reviews. Columbia had made standardized tests optional, following the lead of other elite schools rushing to embrace so-called equity over merit.
Now they’re quietly backtracking, acknowledging that removing objective academic standards didn’t serve students or academic excellence. The move represents a rare admission from the ivory tower that their diversity-obsessed social engineering experiment didn’t work out as planned.
Conservative education advocates have warned for years that eliminating standardized testing would lower academic standards while making admissions processes less transparent. Without concrete measures of academic preparation, elite universities gained even more power to pick winners and losers based on whatever criteria suited their political agendas.
The policy shift also raises uncomfortable questions about what Columbia and other schools really accomplished during their test-optional years. Did they admit students who weren’t academically prepared? Did graduation rates suffer? And how many qualified applicants got rejected because they couldn’t showcase their academic abilities through objective metrics?
Columbia’s retreat from woke admissions policy follows a broader pattern of elite institutions quietly stepping back from their most radical diversity initiatives. After the Supreme Court struck down race-based admissions, universities promised to find new ways to engineer their desired demographic outcomes. Apparently, removing academic standards altogether turned out to be a bridge too far.
The reversal also comes as Americans increasingly question whether Ivy League degrees are worth the massive price tags. When elite schools admit they’ve been experimenting with admissions standards, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in the value of that expensive diploma.
For students and families who’ve been saying all along that test scores matter, Columbia’s flip-flop offers cold comfort. Students who applied during the test-optional years based their college decisions on the policies in place at the time. Now the goalposts have moved again.
The about-face highlights the instability that comes from letting political ideology drive academic policy. Merit-based admissions aren’t perfect, but at least they’re consistent. When universities treat their admissions standards like a political weathervane, everyone loses — especially the students caught in the middle.
Wyatt Matters
This isn’t complicated. Schools work best when they reward hard work and academic achievement, not when they’re trying to meet quotas dreamed up by diversity consultants. Columbia’s reversal proves that merit matters, no matter how much the faculty lounge crowd wants to pretend otherwise. American families deserve honest admissions standards that don’t change with every political wind.
