Wyatt’s Take

  • Larry Summers faces lifetime ban from top economic group.
  • Emails show Summers’ close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Decision sparks renewed scrutiny of Harvard’s links to Epstein.

The American Economic Association has banned former Harvard President Larry Summers for life. The move comes after emails showed his close relationship with the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The AEA said it accepted Summers’ resignation and is imposing a lifetime ban. He is also not allowed to attend or speak at any AEA events.

“The AEA condemns Mr. Summers’ conduct, as reflected in publicly reported communications, as fundamentally inconsistent with its standards of professional integrity and with the trust placed in mentors within the economics profession,” the association stated.

Summers led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and kept in contact with Epstein after his 2008 conviction. Harvard is also being criticized for its former connection to Epstein and donations he made.

In released emails, Epstein even called himself Summers’ “wing man.” As these details became public, Summers resigned from several advisory roles and faced protests after a video went viral showing students demanding answers about his ties to Epstein.

The association’s action highlights the ongoing controversy around elite institutions and their wealthy connections. For many Americans, this case shows how the powerful sometimes face real consequences when ties to wrongdoing are exposed.
