January 1, El Paso Mayor Declares Emergency

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY…
1868: Despite bitter opposition, U.S. President Andrew Johnson grants unconditional pardon to all persons involved in Southern rebellion (Civil War).

The mayor of El Paso, Texas, has declared a state of emergency over concerns about an impending influx of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mayor Oscar Leeser’s (D) declaration came days before Title 42, a Trump-era immigration policy that reduced the number of asylum seekers allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, was set to expire.

“I said from the beginning that I would call it when I felt that either our asylum seekers or our community was not safe, and I really believe that today our asylum seekers are not safe, as we have hundreds and hundreds on the street and that’s not the way we want to treat people,” Leeser said at a press conference.

Title 42 was initially set to expire on Dec. 21, but the Supreme Court issued a temporary stay keeping the measure in place following an emergency filing by the attorneys general in 19 states.

Leeser said that once Title 42 does expire, the city’s numbers of apprehensions and street releases “will go from 2,500 to four, five or maybe six thousand.”

Migrant encounters at the southern border have already hit record numbers — a daily tally exceeding 9,000 three times in the first 10 days of December, Axios reported.

Officials are now bracing for the possibility of between 12,000 and 14,000 migrants attempting to cross the border daily.

“The Administration is committed to continuing to secure our borders while maintaining safe, orderly and humane processing of migrants. This will remain the case when Title 42 is lifted,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

On Monday, Leeser said that roughly 20,000 migrants are waiting across the border for Title 42 to expire.

“We’ve been talking to some of the partners in Mexico, and we’re talking also to the Border Patrol and those are the numbers that have been fed back to us,” Leeser said. “The shelters in [Ciudad] Juarez are completely full today, and they believe there’s about 20,000 people ready to come into El Paso.”

The Texas Military Department confirmed that 400 Texas National Guard members trained in “mass migration response” arrived in El Paso to assist with security operations.

What a shame and so cruel. Keep Title 42 in place! The system uses restrictions only when it’s convenient. KEEP BUSSES ROLLING!!!
