  • Seized weapons show cartels match military power
  • Americans told to shelter due to cartel violence

Mexican forces killed Ruben “Nemesio” Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho,” in a raid, taking down one of the most notorious cartel bosses. The operation uncovered rocket launchers and armored vehicles, a reminder that cartels are now armed like armies.

Officials say these groups have attacked government forces before, using heavy weapons usually seen in war. During Sunday’s raid, security troops faced gunfire and had to bring out aircraft and special units to overpower the cartel’s men.

“CJNG operates much like a paramilitary group, not just a drug ring,” stated a former U.S. law enforcement official.

The cartel is feared for its organized tactics—roadblocks, armed convoys, and city attacks—which help it control territory and stand up to rivals and police alike. Their firepower has been growing for years, putting regular law enforcement at a disadvantage.

After the raid, the U.S. State Department warned Americans in several Mexican states to shelter in place because of security operations and cartel activity.

This event shows the dangers posed when cartels challenge governments head-on, and why Mexican authorities now send in military forces rather than rely on local police.
