January 1, Driver Plows Into 25 Police Recruits in “Mass Casualty Incident”
More than two dozen Los Angeles County law enforcement recruits were injured after a driver “going the wrong-way” plowed his SUV into the class while they were on a training run.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said recruits from its class assigned to the STARS Center Training Academy in Whittier, California, were struck at approximately 6:26 a.m. PST on Wednesday. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said it was responding to a “mass casualty incident.”
“They were running, doing their morning training exercise when this person ran into them,” Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Sheila Kelliher said.
Five people are in critical condition, with one on a ventilator, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva later confirmed. Four people sustained moderate injuries and 16 suffered minor injuries. All 25 recruits were transported to nearby hospitals. Villanueva noted that the most severe injuries included head trauma, broken bones, and loss of limbs.
“We’re just facing some life-altering injuries for some most severely injured recruits,” Villanueva said. “This is this is very, very odd, to say the least. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this.”
“It looked like an airplane wreck. There were so many bodies scattered everywhere in different states of injury that it was pretty traumatic for all individuals involved,” he added.
The driver, later identified as 22-year-old Nicholas Gutierrez, passed the breathalyzer test administered at the scene. Gutierrez also sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, Villanueva said.
Fox 11 reported that officials found marijuana inside the SUV. Gutierrez was taken into custody on Thursday but was released hours later.
The names of the victims have not been released.

Why was he released hours later? If he wasn’t on anything then it had to be on purpose and that makes it attempted murder or at least manslaughter. Only in CA could this type of crime happen and turn the guy loose.

Absolutely sickening that the Police Department in California. did not support men training to be police.. Letting this criminal go free shows the radical leftist attitude in the state.
Something like this should not exist in America. This is insane! ..This type of reaction from a police department should not be accepted. The criminal who perpetrated this horrendous crime deserves capital punishment and those in the police department who let him loose should be severly punished..

The driver is apparently well connected to important liberals. I saw a couple MSM reports couched in phrases like: “well he didn’t mean to hurt anyone / didn’t realize he was driving the wrong way, etc, etc.” they also claim he was just “being released while the investigation continues.” If the MSM ever reports on it again, it will be along the lines of he got a warning to drive more carefully.
