January 1, Democrats Stall DHS Funding, Shutdown Looms

Wyatt’s Take

  • Senate failed to pass a full-year Homeland Security funding bill.
  • Democrats demand stricter immigration limits before backing funding.
  • Vital national security services face disruption as shutdown nears.

The Senate could not secure enough votes to keep Homeland Security running, putting border security and multiple agencies at risk as another shutdown deadline nears. Democratic senators blocked DHS funding to push for softer immigration enforcement, leaving over 260,000 workers facing uncertainty.

Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman was the only Democrat to support funding. Former GOP leader Mitch McConnell missed the vote. Democrats continue to insist on sweeping changes to federal immigration policy, including ending certain ICE operations and limiting arrests without judicial warrants.

Republicans argue these demands undermine law enforcement and national safety. They say the Trump administration has tried to reach a deal while Democrats delay critical security funding.

“The announcement that [Border Czar Tom] Homan made this morning was additive to the attempt to try and find a solution here,” said Senator John Thune. He explained Democrats have the latest legislative offer but haven’t accepted it.

This week, Homan revealed federal immigration officers were leaving Minneapolis after a surge in enforcement, saying, “unprecedented levels of coordination” in Minnesota ended Operation Metro Surge. Democrats refused to fund DHS, arguing not enough has changed regarding enforcement nationwide.

Senator Chris Coons stated, “I’m not going to vote for funding as long as they’re still doing what they’re doing, not just in Minneapolis, but across the country.” Despite Democratic claims, ICE and CBP already have multi-year funding due to a bill Republicans recently secured for law enforcement agencies.

Failing to fund DHS could shut down the Coast Guard, Secret Service, FEMA, and TSA, threatening disaster safety and airport security. Leaders warned a shutdown would harm the nation, but essential staff would continue working without pay, while Congress would still receive its checks.

Senator Rick Scott blamed Democrats, saying, “Chuck Schumer has decided to shut down the government again. TSA is not going to get paid. FEMA is not going to get paid.” Short-term funding runs out Friday at midnight. Senators like John Thune call for a temporary fix to keep vital services up while talks continue.
