January 1, Democrat Senate Nominee Claims She’s Not a Socialist After Joining Radical Group

Wyatt’s Take

  • Florida Democrat Angie Nixon says she’s not a socialist despite joining the Democratic Socialists of America — an organization that wants to abolish the very Senate seat she’s running for
  • When pressed on DSA’s radical platform (new Constitution, abolish the Senate, defund military, end Iran sanctions), Nixon cherry-picked which parts she agrees with while claiming membership was just about housing and healthcare
  • Nixon campaigned on Medicare-for-all, free childcare, national rent freeze, abolishing ICE, and a universal jobs program — but insists she’s a capitalist who just wants ‘strong regulation’

Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon spent Thursday afternoon trying to convince voters she’s not actually a socialist — despite joining the Democratic Socialists of America and running on their entire wish list.

During an appearance on a major network news program, Nixon faced tough questions about why she joined an organization whose national platform calls for abolishing the very office she’s seeking. Her answer? She just liked the parts about housing and healthcare.

“Ashley Moody knows that I’m not a socialist,” Nixon said. “I joined the DSA because I believe in them in regards to fighting for adequate public housing, as well as fighting for quality healthcare, as well as making sure that we are getting our veterans off the street, taking big money out of politics, right?”

But the DSA’s official program goes far beyond helping veterans and building housing. The organization calls for a completely new Constitution, abolishing the United States Senate, defunding what they call the “Department of War,” ending sanctions on Iran and other hostile nations, and establishing government ownership of major corporations and essential industries.

When pressed on these radical positions, Nixon tried to distance herself from her own organization’s platform. She rejected abolishing the Senate and drafting a new constitution. She also claimed she didn’t support defunding the military — though she quickly added calls for “greater scrutiny” of defense spending.

“I don’t believe in defunding anything. I think we need to make sure that we are scrutinizing them, and we need to make sure we’re spending money the right way,” Nixon said.

Notably, Nixon dodged the question about lifting sanctions on Iran entirely.

Republicans aren’t buying Nixon’s attempt to rebrand herself as a moderate.

“Socialist lunatic Angie Nixon wants to empty our prisons, open our borders, and raise your taxes to bankroll their far-left agenda,” RNC spokeswoman Emma Hall said in a statement. “Every word out of Nixon’s mouth is an in-kind contribution to Republicans in Florida and across the country.”

The interviewer then asked Nixon whether she considers herself a capitalist — a question that has tripped up progressives before.

“I live in a capitalistic society. I’m a small business owner. I like to make money. I don’t see what the problem is,” she said. “I’m a capitalist who believes that we need some strong regulation.”

That answer might be news to voters who’ve been following Nixon’s campaign. She’s running on Medicare-for-all, free childcare, a national rent freeze, an eviction moratorium, a universal jobs program, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Nixon dismissed scrutiny of her socialist ties as a distraction from real issues facing Florida families. But her Republican opponent, Sen. Ashley Moody, isn’t letting voters forget what Nixon stands for.

“Angie Nixon, who will be my opponent in November, and her comrades want to destroy this country and everything that it is built on,” Moody said.

Nixon advanced to the general election after defeating a well-funded establishment candidate by nearly 12 percentage points, despite being outspent roughly 16-to-1. That upset victory sent shockwaves through Florida politics and put Democrats on defense.

Moody was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to replace Marco Rubio after Rubio became Secretary of State. The winner in November will serve the final two years of Rubio’s term.

Why It Matters

Working Americans know the difference between common-sense help and socialist takeovers. When a candidate joins an organization that wants to abolish the Senate, rewrite the Constitution, and have government run major industries — then claims she’s not a socialist — voters see right through it. Florida families deserve straight answers about who’s really fighting for them versus who’s pushing a radical agenda that would fundamentally transform America.

Old Man here. Little story about natural born liars. When I was a young man (long time ago). I was living in California and rented a small 2 bedroom apartment with another man for financial reasons. He was a good looking guy and the ladies liked him. I was a one-woman guy and he never tried to hit on my girlfriend. Excellent situation until I was jarred awake one morning by the noise of a tow truck hooking up to my vehicle parked on the street. I went out and stopped the guy by threating to call the police. He said that he had a hookup order for my vehicle. What he actually had was a tow truck slip with the description of my vehicle and the licenses. Remember, this is in California. The slip listed a local warehouse store that sold high-end products. I called the store and talked to the lady in charge and she told me that was my friend’s car and he had used it as collateral to buy some high-end furniture for his new apartment. Turns out my friend was having a little bit of afterhours entertainment with this lady and she believed everything he had told her. Natural born liar. I had the tow truck driver read her the information on my registration and she promised to get back to me. I ended my rental arrangement with the guy that day. When his check bounced due to insufficient funds, the store tried to make me pay for the stuff because the sales receipt was addressed to my address. I never saw the stuff. Again, this is the land of fruits and nuts, California. A natural born liar will always tell you what you want to believe so you do not believe what you actually see. Old folks say to never sign a check until you have slept on it and checked 7 times.
