Wyatt’s Take

  • Top Democrats refuse to answer questions about Jay Jones’ violent text messages.
  • Some Democrats condemned the remarks, but many dodged the issue or walked away from reporters.
  • Jones’ disturbing comments have stunned voters and rocked Virginia’s races.

The race for Virginia attorney general took a shocking turn after it was revealed that Democrat Jay Jones had sent violent text messages about killing a Republican lawmaker. Top Democrats like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks refused to discuss whether Jones should drop out, avoiding questions and turning away from reporters.

“I’ll be honest with you, I don’t recall exactly what he said, but at least the reflections I got, I thought it was horrible, I really do,” said Sen. Andy Kim. He added, “We need to make sure we’re holding ourselves up to a high standard, especially those in elected office.”

Other senators like John Hickenlooper and Tina Smith also sidestepped the question, offering excuses but not addressing Jones’ behavior. In the texts, Jones compared his Republican rival to tyrants and wrote, “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler and Pol Pot. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.” He also wished harm on Gilbert’s children.

Sen. Ted Cruz called the Democratic silence “staggering, particularly with the spate of political violence we have seen.”

Many Americans are left wondering why so many top Democrats refuse to condemn this disturbing rhetoric or call for higher standards among elected officials.

Keep your eyes on this story—these are the people who want to lead and enforce our laws. What happens here matters for the rest of the country.
