January 1, COVID Cases Plummet Nationwide

Published

The U.S. is experiencing a steep drop in COVID cases.

States and cities across the political spectrum are doing away with pandemic-era mandates as cases diminish.

The U.S. now averages roughly 140,000 new cases per day, marking a 64% drop over the past two weeks. The pace of new infections is declining nationwide.

Some regions are seeing both a decline and a small number of cases.

New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. are averaging fewer than 25 new cases per 100,000 people per day. And Maryland averages 12 cases per day for every 100,000 residents.

Not every state is quite there yet. In Alaska, new cases are dropping significantly, but the state is still averaging 100 cases per 100,000 people — the highest rate in the country.
