January 1, Congressman Hospitalized After Collapsing at DC Event

Republican South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at an event in Washington, D.C. Tuesday night, as reported by his office.

The 77-year-old congressman, a stalwart representative of South Carolina’s 2nd District since 2001, was attending a Ukrainian Independence Day celebration when he fell ill. Thankfully, a physician present at the event provided immediate medical assistance, and Wilson was quickly transported to a nearby hospital.

“Doctors have informed us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms. I was able to speak with him moments ago and I’m incredibly thankful that he is stable and under professional medical care,” said Wilson’s son, Alan. His wife remains by his side at the hospital.

Support for Wilson from fellow members of South Carolina’s congressional delegation was immediate and heartfelt.

“Praying for a full and speedy recovery for my friend,” said Republican South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.

Rep. Nancy Mace added her prayers, noting, “Spoke to his family tonight. Prayers up for a speedy recovery – as fast as humanly possible! Go Joe!”

Earlier on Tuesday, Wilson had been busy at work, participating in votes on the House floor and even sharing light-hearted moments with reporters. His tireless commitment to his role was showcased by his recent return from several international trips, fulfilling his duties as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia.
