Wyatt’s Take

  • France is cracking down hard on Shein after illegal, disturbing items were sold online.
  • The US response has been quieter, without the same headline-making outrage or action.
  • Shein popup stores are popping up in US cities, but no big flagship shop like in Paris.

France pulled the plug on Shein’s online sales after finding the retailer was selling child-like sex dolls and banned weapons. French officials threatened to ban the website after saying Shein broke laws on child safety and weapons like brass knuckles. Hundreds protested at the new Paris store, accusing Shein of flooding the market with cheap, throwaway clothes that hurt local workers and traditions.

Shein claims outside sellers were the problem and says it pulled the bad listings, but French leaders weren’t buying it. Calls are growing in Europe to slap sanctions on the company, with EU investigators taking the complaint seriously.

“The sale of these childlike sex dolls is extremely concerning,” said EU digital spokesman Thomas Regnier.

Europe’s new rules now put more pressure on giant retailers to police illegal content. This is part of a larger backlash over Shein’s model of fast, cheap fashion and accusations of low standards and dodgy labor practices. France hit Shein with a $45 million fine in July over claims of misleading discounts and false promises about being eco-friendly.

Meanwhile, the US is tightening import loopholes that once let Shein ship cheap goods duty-free, helping level the playing field for American businesses. But so far, US politicians and crowds aren’t raising the same ruckus as in France. Instead, Shein popup stores are quietly appearing in cities like Dallas and New York.
