Wyatt’s Take

  • Conservative activists launch Only Citizens Vote Bus Tour.
  • SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship before voting in federal elections.
  • Tour organizers aim to build pressure for Congress to pass the measure.

Tea Party Patriots Action is hitting the road with the Only Citizens Vote Bus Tour across more than a dozen states to highlight the need for tighter election rules. Their mission is clear: pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which would force new voters to show proof of citizenship before voting in federal elections.

This SAVE Act updates old federal law that lets folks register with just an honor system affirmation. Supporters say it’s a hole that needs patching, while opponents argue current laws already cover false citizenship claims.

Jenny Beth Martin, the group’s co-founder, calls current voter registration a failing honor system. “Voters over the past 30 years have been asked to put a lot of faith in a system that has proved less than honorable.”

Cases of noncitizens voting keep surfacing, like a Chinese national using a student ID to vote in Michigan during the 2024 presidential race. An audit later identified 15 alleged noncitizens who voted in that election. Democrats and the left shrug these off as rare, but watchdogs say the rot goes deeper.

Thousands of noncitizens appear on voter rolls nationwide. As Heritage Foundation’s Matthew Tragesser put it, “Having laws on the books does not guarantee their compliance.”

Dirty voter rolls are another big issue. J. Christian Adams from the Public Interest Legal Foundation testified to Congress, warning that nearly a quarter of New York’s voter roll missed Social Security numbers, weakening election security. “Left unchecked, this means millions of records cannot be matched to the Social Security Death Index for reliable verification.”

The SAVE Act would force states to do a better job scrubbing rolls of ineligible names. Tea Party Patriots Action says this reform restores trust and honesty to elections. Despite House passage, over 200 Democrats voted against it, blocking further progress.

Martin says most Americans, regardless of party, want only citizens voting. “Over 80 percent of Americans want to ensure that only citizens are voting in our elections. That is a supermajority of Democrats and independents, as well as Republicans.”

The Bus Tour ends with a big rally September 10 in Washington, D.C., where organizers will deliver petitions to Congress, insisting it’s time our election laws put Americans first.

Think it’s time only Americans control who gets elected? Stand up and make your voice count—our nation needs strong rules everyone can trust.

Wyatt Matters

Making sure only American citizens have a say at the ballot box is truly a commonsense step. Honest elections mean government that listens to regular folks, not outsiders or political elites.
