In an unfortunate incident that unfolded over the weekend, the Michigan GOP state committee meeting turned violent, resulting in one member being dispatched to the emergency room.
The scuffle broke out at the Doherty Hotel where the state party’s meeting was being held.
According to a report by The Detroit News, the conflict erupted when James Chapman, a Republican from Wayne County, was trying to enter the meeting room.
As he was jiggling the door handle, Mark DeYoung, Clare County Republican Party Chair, opened the door from inside.
“He kicked me in my balls as soon as I opened the door,” DeYoung revealed to The Detroit News while in the ER, disclosing that he had suffered a broken rib and was planning on pressing charges against Chapman.
Chapman, however, gave a contrasting version of events, claiming that DeYoung swung first after threatening him.
Although the melee took place outside the meeting room, it did not go unnoticed by those inside.
“From my clear vantage point a kerfuffle occurred outside our meeting room. We recessed for 5 minutes. It had nothing to do with the content of our meeting,” stated committee member Kristin Lee.
James Chapman, one of the individuals involved in the fight, left an unforgettable remark for future Michigan brawlers:
“When you see me taking my glasses off, I’m ready to rock.”
In an interesting turn of events, this isn’t the first time members of the Michigan GOP have resorted to physical altercations.
As noted by HuffPo, a previous meeting of the Michigan Republican Party leadership held in the same venue also saw signs of internal strife.
That incident, while involving less serious injuries, ended with one woman shoving another’s face.
