Wyatt’s Take

  • Pennsylvania county’s election misstep leaves many angry
  • 75,000 voters forced into provisional ballots due to missing names
  • Concerns grow about election integrity and local leadership

Chester County, Pennsylvania, officials kept polls open late after poll books only listed Republicans and Democrats, leaving out independent and unaffiliated voters. About 75,000 citizens had to cast provisional ballots since their names were missing, raising concerns over the process.

Election watchers saw varying handling of the mistake; some voters were turned away, others told to come back later. Supplies for provisional ballots ran out in some precincts.

“I do have a concern,”

Raffi Tezian, county GOP Chairman, said.

“This provisional ballot process was supposed to be the process that had to be followed, but early on, there was a process that we learned, some of the precincts were using, where they allowed people who were not on the poll books, to simply write their name on a blank page in the book, sign their name, and then vote in the traditional fashion. So they were providing inconsistent guidance on voting procedures.”

Proper poll books made it to all locations only later in the day. Tezian called the situation “outrageous,” pointing to mismanagement and lack of representation under Democrat leadership.

He noted other county political issues and scandals as part of a troubling pattern.

“From our perspective, we’re trying to get people trying to get people out to vote and participate, and then this kind of thing happens and it has a chilling effect, right? It’s unfortunate,”

Tezian said.

“I hope going forward that they do a deep dive and a debrief on this whole thing, because I think that’s going to be critical.”

If problems like this keep happening, folks start to lose trust that their vote matters. Every voter should have a fair shot at casting their ballot and knowing it counts.

Our communities depend on honest, straightforward elections.
