A sharp-nosed K9 named Maisy just proved why we need tougher border security. The Customs and Border Protection dog alerted officers to a suspicious suitcase coming in from Thailand.

When agents opened it up, they found a haul that belongs in a nightmare, not an airport.

Inside that single bag: 50 pounds of raw meat, 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants — and about 16 pounds of live Bengal monitor lizard. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had to take custody of the reptile.

CBP posted a photo of Maisy posing proudly behind the bizarre stash.

“If you discovered all this in a suitcase, wouldn’t you be this happy?” the agency wrote.

This isn’t just weird — it’s dangerous. CBP agriculture specialists inspect international luggage every day for prohibited meat, plants, and wildlife that can bring pests, animal diseases, or invasive species into the United States.

One sick animal or contaminated plant can devastate American farms and families.

In a separate case at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers teamed up with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to inspect a vehicle crossing from Mexico. Inside, they found approximately 436 fish — rockfish, lingcod, sheephead, and yellowtail.

The three people in the car didn’t have valid Mexican fishing licenses. Officers quickly determined they were planning to sell the fish illegally in the United States.

The haul was seized as evidence. Charges are now being pursued for unlawful take of fish in Mexico, fishing without licenses, and illegally importing the fish into the United States.
