Lee County, Florida authorities arrested 38-year-old Uriel Santiago Perez, a Mexican national living in the country illegally, on charges of sexually assaulting a minor.

The arrest came after the victim reported the assault during a routine home walkthrough.

Sheriff’s deputies say the evidence was strong enough to make the arrest immediately.

“We will not tolerate predators in our community, especially those here unlawfully,” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“This suspect’s presence in Florida is a direct result of failed federal immigration policies.”

Local officials noted that Perez had no legal status and no right to be in the United States at the time of the alleged crime.

The case is now moving through the court system.
