January 1, Biden’s Supreme Court Nominee Will Be a Black Woman: ‘It’s Long Overdue’

President Joe Biden confirmed that he will announce his nominee for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s replacement by the end of February.

Biden said he will nominate a Black woman as Breyer’s replacement, saying “it’s long overdue.”

“I’ve made no decision except one: The person I will nominate will be someone of extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity. And that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court,” Biden said.

“In the end, I will nominate a historic candidate, someone who is worthy of Justice Breyer’s legacy.”

Breyer formally announced his retirement on Thursday, saying it will go into effect when the court “rises for the summer recess (typically late June or early July) assuming that by then my successor has been nominated and confirmed.”

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden pledged to make a Black woman his first nominee to the high court.

“The president believes that sitting judges can make excellent justices but he does not view that as a prerequisite,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said about the nomination.

Many liberals called for Biden to follow through on his campaign promise, including Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).

But conservatives said Biden’s decision to nominate someone based on race and gender was “pandering” and discriminatory.

“The stability of our institutions CANNOT be solely dependent on sex & race. Biden’s pandering is pathetic,” Rep. Lauren Boebert tweeted.

To base a decision on race is discriminatory IMO no matter what race.
