In his commencement speech at Howard University on Saturday, President Joe Biden labeled white supremacy as “the most dangerous terrorist threat” to the United States.
This statement came as part of his broader message emphasizing the need for unity, truth, and love over hate.
President Biden stressed the importance of standing up against the “poison of white supremacy,” a sentiment he emphasized was not made solely due to the audience’s ethnic background.
He claimed to share this view universally, regardless of his audience.
However, the speech also saw the revival of a controversial claim from Biden’s 2019 campaign.
The President repeated his assertion that then-President Donald Trump had praised the neo-Nazis involved in the Charlottesville, Virginia riots as “very fine people.”
This claim has been repeatedly debunked, with fact checkers noting that Trump explicitly condemned the neo-Nazis in his original statement.
“I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and white nationalists because they should be condemned totally.” -Donald Trump
In his introduction, President Biden also made an error in referring to the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Keith Rowley.
The President incorrectly identified Rowley as a “Latin American guy” and misstated his academic field, referring to him as a geologist.
