Wyatt’s Take

  • Trump launched the Great American Recovery Initiative to tackle addiction.
  • Advocates say Congress and funding are needed for real change.
  • Regulations and Medicaid cuts may hurt treatment access.

President Trump issued an executive order creating the Great American Recovery Initiative. The task force, led by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and adviser Kathryn Burgum, will focus on the nation’s drug and alcohol problems and spotlight recovery stories.

Many experts argue this step falls short without real funding and congressional action. Over 48 million Americans aged 12 and up deal with substance abuse, while only a few get the help they need.

Current Republican proposals seek to cut Medicaid and add work requirements.

“The biggest payer for addiction treatment, Medicaid, is going to endure historic cuts under the Administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” Humphreys said.

“The noble aspirations expressed in the Executive Order thus lack the funding to be realized.”

Critics say this could make things worse for those needing treatment.

Some point to strict rules around clinic methadone treatment as an extra barrier. Only about 600,000 receive methadone, though millions qualify.

Advocates want Congress to act to expand access to medicine and support.

The administration hopes their plan will jumpstart lawmakers to commit funding and break down outdated regulations.

If Middle America is going to beat addiction, tackling insurance gaps and red tape matters more than talk. Rural communities already feel the pinch from limited health coverage and clinic rules, and they need action, not promises.
