January 1, Starbucks Takes Legal Stand Against Pro-Palestinian Union
Amid an increasing boycott movement, Starbucks, the renowned coffee giant, is making its position crystal clear.
A direct cease-and-desist order has been sent to Workers United, a union with approximately 9,000 members that includes Starbucks baristas. The union had previously publicized its support for Palestinians following a significant attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7.
Addressed to Lynne Fox, the international leader of Workers United, the letter minces no words. Starbucks is prepared to take legal action unless the union halts its use of the Starbucks name and logo. Additionally, the coffee giant demands the union clarify that its stance favoring Palestinians over Israel does not mirror Starbucks’ position.
The letter, penned by Starbucks’ legal counsel, Rocky Tsai, states, “Anger against Starbucks persists because your organization’s actions have fueled the inaccurate perception that Starbuck’s supports violence against civilians.”
The October 7 attack led by Hamas was unprecedented in its severity. Israel responded with substantial airstrikes on Gaza. To date, the confrontation has resulted in over 4,000 casualties across Israel and Gaza, with the abduction of almost 200 Israelis, children included, according to the Associated Press.
The cease-and-desist letter cites Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who amplified the backlash against Starbucks by championing a nationwide boycott in response to the union’s statements.
The legal correspondence emphasizes the real-world ramifications for Starbucks employees. Due to the union’s controversial political stance, baristas have faced confrontations with “enraged and volatile consumers,” resulting in more than 1,000 grievances lodged with the company.
This all stemmed from a now-removed social media post by Starbucks Workers United, declaring “Solidarity with Palestine!” Subsequent union-sponsored rallies, rallying behind Palestinians, followed the barrage of Hamas rockets targeting Israel.
Interestingly, the letter doesn’t attribute any sales decline to the boycott movement. Yet, it underscores the adverse effects on the company’s global reputation and employees’ safety.
Starbucks Workers United, representing a mere 340 out of Starbucks’ 34,000 stores globally, is a branch of Workers United. This larger entity self-describes as an organization upholding justice, education, equity, compassion, and civility and operates under the influential Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
When Newsweek reached out, neither Workers United nor SEIU responded.
Starbucks had previously condemned the union’s position, categorizing Hamas-initiated attacks as “heinous acts of terror.”
The cease-and-desist letter, however, emphasized that prior statements failed to offset the misconception that a minor, non-affiliated union symbolizes Starbucks’ viewpoints.
The letter added, “By fomenting this anger, your organization has recklessly endangered the safety and well-being of hundreds of thousands of baristas around the world, including its own members and those who fled conflicts or have friends and family living in conflict.”

Hamas are evil wicked people, they started a war on Israel and now you want Israel turn the other cheek? Those murderous men went into private homes and killed and kidnapped innocent people children included in Israel. No way should they turn the other cheek. Hamas must be dealt with, don’t dish it out if you can’t take the consequences. LORD GOD HELP ISRAEL FIGHT AND WIN THIS WAR AGAINST THEM. In Jesus Christ name…AMEN

If each person who supports Hamas realized that they are supporting the murdering and decapitation of babies, the burning of babies, children, women, men, grandparents, they might reconsider their support of murderers. If not, than any responsible company has a right to deprive these supporters of murderers of employment, as they are antagonizing a large number of their customers, who can go elsewhere for the same product. If these people insist on their own civil rights to support murderers, I strongly urge them to move to Gaza and discover the truth about murderers. I know many people who will not patronize Starbucks because of the bad publicity they have received. There are corporations which have announced that they will not hire known supporters of Hamas.

Just because you are concerned about the well being of Palestinians does not mean you are a backer of Hamas. And thousands of innocent Palestinians have been killed in Israel and heavily controlled by Israel. They deserve their own state just as the Jews have. In fact originally the Palestinians had open arms to them coming to to their country. So in my opinion “ALL LIVES MATTER” and that has become a US model. This model needs to be the case about the Israeli and Palestinian disagreements. The violence by Israelis and Hamas needs to stop. Recently Israel is using the term they are at WAR and do not mince words. They want to control that entire region.
