He is most remembered for his iconic role as the no-nonsense Detective Sergeant John Taggart in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, where he starred alongside Eddie Murphy. Ashton’s role in the 1984 blockbuster made him a household name, and he reprised this role in three out of the four films, including “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” released on Netflix in 2024.

Beyond his memorable role in “Beverly Hills Cop,” Ashton made significant contributions to the entertainment world, including co-hosting “The Ashton and Davis Show” on 870 ESPN Radio. His impressive list of credits encompasses roles in cultural staples like “M*A*S*H” and “Midnight Run,” where he starred with Robert De Niro. Ashton’s dedication to his craft resulted in a diverse portfolio, with appearances in films like “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “Breaking Away,” and “In the Living Years,” among many others.

His representative spoke warmly of Ashton’s enduring influence, stating, “John leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service.” Ashton’s memory will be cherished by his family, including his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family, who were touched by his life and work.

In lieu of flowers, Ashton’s family requests that donations be made in his memory to Pathways Hospice Care. Ashton’s profound impact on fans and the industry alike ensures that his contributions will be celebrated for generations.
