Film legend and Oscar-winner Judi Dench recently implied that her illustrious career may have come to an end. The reason? The crippling effects of advanced macular degeneration.

With six decades in the entertainment industry, the 89-year-old star recently addressed her debilitating health condition at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. When a journalist inquired about any upcoming projects, she responded, “No, no. I can’t even see.”

Dench has previously discussed her deteriorating eyesight, but this marks her first public declaration of being unable to work.

Throughout her career, she has been celebrated for roles in films such as “Shakespeare In Love,” “Chocolat,” the James Bond franchise, “Philomena,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Mrs Brown,” and many more.

Dench was first diagnosed with macular degeneration, which can cause severe loss of central vision, in 2012.

During a 2023 appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” she admitted to facing challenges when reading movie scripts. “It has become impossible, and because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page,” she said.

The legendary actress also expressed her frustration: “I used to find it very easy to learn lines and remember them. I could do the whole of ‘Twelfth Night’ right now.”

As early as 2021, Dench relied on her friends to read her lines out loud, which she would then memorize.

I’m a 84 yr old senior who has had wet macular degeneration since 2016. I also have scar tissue in part of my left eye which hasn’t seemed to limit me. I did have cataract surgery about 1 yr after my diagnosis which has helped but I have always had an injection in my right eye ranging from Avastin, Eyelea, Vybysmo and Eyelea HD. The last 2 I tried to extend my time between injections but I have just come back to the regular Eylea. My question is had Ms Dench had the injections. I hope she has seeked the care of a retinal doctor. I also take twice a day Preservision which is recommended for people with Macular Degeneration. My very best to a great actress who I have seen many of her movies.
