Wyatt’s Take

  • Two Americans are dead after a pickup slammed onto a youth soccer field, yet the driver walked away without charges while police wait on tests.
  • A former investigator says the public deserves straight answers now instead of rumors and silence.
  • Working families want justice served fast when kids are killed at a simple Saturday game.

The crash happened Saturday at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex.

A mother drove her black pickup onto an active field full of children and parents.

Six-year-old Cole Adrian and thirty-five-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson, were killed.

Several others were hurt.

“Law enforcement certainly needed to do a better job as to describing why these charges haven’t been filed.”

Jamie Copenhaver, a former Florida sheriff’s detective who worked with an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, says the silence is feeding confusion.

Police released the driver the same day after interviews, citing pending toxicology and vehicle checks.

“Based on the information available Sunday morning, and after consultation with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, investigators did not have probable cause to arrest the driver. She was released, and the investigation remains ongoing. Her release does not represent a final determination about whether criminal charges are appropriate.”

Chief Joe Sullivan defended the call.

“We know that this case has captured the attention of people all over the country, and many of those people have strong opinions about the incident even though they do not have direct knowledge of what occurred.”

Copenhaver says the black box data will show speed, brake timing, and any skid marks.

“It doesn’t take that long, in my opinion, to download that data, have one of their experts go over it.”

He added that alcohol tests usually come back fast.

“If it’s alcohol-related, they’re going to know instantaneously.”

Police say the driver is a U.S. citizen with a clean record and no law-enforcement ties.

They are still testing the truck and waiting on full toxicology results.

“We ask everyone to be responsible with what they share, consider the harm misinformation can cause and allow investigators to do their work based on facts and evidence, not speculation.”
