The candidate, an epidemiologist by training, wrote a 2012 essay where he labeled the effort to fight breast cancer the ‘Pink Ribbon Lobby.’ He criticized government support for the disease that kills tens of thousands of American women every year.

The comments are now resurfacing as the same politician seeks a U.S. Senate seat representing the Great Lakes State.

“The ‘Pink Ribbon Lobby’ has been remarkably successful in securing federal funding for breast cancer research,” he wrote at the time.

Critics say the remarks show a pattern of hostility toward traditional American priorities and reveal how out of touch elite candidates can be with working families facing real health concerns.

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among American women. Research funding has helped drive survival rates higher over the past several decades.
