Wyatt’s Take

  • The Department of Justice found UCLA Law School gave an unfair edge to some applicants based solely on skin color, leaving White and Asian students on the outside.
  • Officials called the practice a clear violation of federal civil-rights law and demanded the school fix its system.
  • The ruling backs what millions of parents have said for years: merit should decide college spots, not skin color or political checkboxes.

The Department of Justice has told UCLA School of Law to stop using race as a deciding factor in admissions after finding the school gave special treatment to some students because of their skin color.

Investigators said the school’s practices went against the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that colleges cannot use race to tip the scales for or against applicants.

“The use of race as a thumb on the scale” was the exact phrase the DOJ used to describe the school’s actions.

The findings come after months of review and follow complaints that White and Asian applicants were routinely passed over despite stronger academic records.

The DOJ has ordered UCLA to review every admission decision tied to the illegal practice and to make sure future applicants are judged only on merit, character, and achievement.

School officials have not yet said whether they will appeal the order or simply change their policies to match the law.
