A Detroit pastor who captured national attention for his bold stand against Islamic influence in nearby Dearborn is sounding the alarm about Michigan’s Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church delivered a stark warning during an interview about what El-Sayed’s election could mean for America’s judicial system.

“Can you imagine him being in the Senate, being able to recommend federal judges to presidents?”

“That’s his goal. His goal is to be able to recommend federal judge to presidents for appointments, and then we’re going to find ourselves in Sharia law all over this land.”

El-Sayed’s commitment to Islamic law isn’t speculation. In a 2009 interview, the candidate openly discussed following Sharia law when purchasing an Ann Arbor condo. He took out a special loan structure that complies with Islamic restrictions on interest — the interest amount was simply added to the purchase price instead.

“Ultimately, the question is, when I die and I stand before God and go through everything I did in my life, I don’t want to say I did it the easy way instead of the Shariah-compliant way,” El-Sayed told the publication.

El-Sayed’s campaign spokeswoman tried damage control, claiming he opposes writing religious law into American law. But his own words tell a different story about his priorities.

Sewell didn’t hold back in his assessment of El-Sayed and other Muslim politicians who refuse to fully embrace American culture.

“This is the type of conquering religion whereby people like Abdul El-Sayed, people like [Rep.] Rashida Tlaib, you have [Rep. Ilhan] Omar over there in Minnesota — you look at these people that have a desire, not to assimilate to our culture, but to take over our culture.”

“They will wave flags to say ‘free Palestine.’ They will say ‘to the river, to the sea,’ all on American soil. I mean, these are the type of people that are not looking to assimilate. They’re looking to conquer.”

The pastor, who grew up on Detroit’s east side and describes himself as a “student of the streets” who was “mentored by murderers,” has become a prominent voice for Christian values in Michigan politics.

Last week, he went viral after confronting the Dearborn city council directly.

“We are not a nation of Muslims, we are nation of Christians!”

“America, we have lost this city. This is a city that is no longer up under American laws; we are up under Sharia law. We will not have it anymore.”

Sewell also hosted President Trump at his church during the 2024 campaign and spoke at the Republican National Convention that year.

El-Sayed’s choice of campaign allies raises even more red flags. He’s been campaigning with socialist streamer Hasan Piker, who infamously declared “America deserved 9/11” back in 2019. Piker has praised Communist China and Mao Zedong, called for capitalists to be murdered in the streets, and spewed repeated antisemitic comments.

“I believe that there’s treason for you to say those type of words, that America deserves 9/11,” Sewell said.

Piker recently mocked conservative commentator Charlie Kirk’s death by singing a viral internet song in front of a crowd of socialists. Sewell described Piker as the “demonic” version of Kirk.

El-Sayed attempted to distance himself from Piker this week after the streamer argued that rhetoric linking American Jews to Israel could provoke attacks against Jewish Americans — comments widely condemned as antisemitic victim-blaming.

“If Jews in America keep putting this idea out there that they are singularly invested in Israel, eventually someone is going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews,” Piker said.

El-Sayed responded by saying all Americans should be able to advocate without fear of violence and called antisemitism a “scourge.” But the damage was done — his judgment in choosing campaign surrogates is now under intense scrutiny.

Sewell concluded his warning by emphasizing what makes America exceptional.

“This is one nation under the God of the Bible. The reason why America is great — it’s because God is great.”

“God gave us victory, [in the] Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, [the] Civil Rights Movement. That happened essentially with Black and White Christians.”

“And now people come from all over. We’re not saying you’re not welcome here. What we’re saying is assimilate to our culture.”

Representatives for Omar and Tlaib did not respond to requests for comment.

Why It Matters

This isn’t about religious freedom — it’s about whether America’s constitutional principles or foreign religious law will guide our courts and culture. Pastor Sewell is asking the questions too many politicians are afraid to ask: Do candidates believe in American exceptionalism, or are they working to fundamentally transform this nation into something unrecognizable? Michigan voters deserve clear answers before they hand over a Senate seat.
