A young woman who won the Miss North Carolina USA crown has been stripped of her title just weeks before the national competition. Now she’s speaking out about what really happened.

Brittany Boltinhouse says she believes her conservative Christian values are the real reason the pageant organization took away her crown in early August. The Miss USA Organization announced the decision less than three weeks before she was set to compete at the 75th annual Miss USA pageant on August 27.

Chairman Thom Brodeur released a statement saying the organization “does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity.” He claimed the conduct happened “over an extended period of time.”

But he never explained what Boltinhouse actually did.

In a recent interview with the Carolina Journal, the dethroned beauty queen said she’s bound by a confidentiality agreement that prevents her from sharing her side of the story. Despite that gag order, she made her position clear.

“I believe and think I was stripped from my title because of my political stance and my belief system as a conservative Christian woman,” she said.

Boltinhouse didn’t sound bitter or defeated. She called losing the crown a “blessing in disguise” and said she’s grateful it happened to her instead of a younger woman who might not have been able to handle the public scrutiny.

“I’m very much at peace and I’m actually glad it happened to me and not some other young lady that, you know, maybe just probably wouldn’t make it through what I’m going through right now,” Boltinhouse said.

“The scrutiny, my family behind it as well. But I will say that I’m very much at peace and I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I know who I am and I know what I can become.”

When asked directly about her faith, Boltinhouse didn’t hesitate.

“I’m proud of my faith. I’m proud of my standards. I’m a proud conservative woman, but a Christian woman. I’m a God-fearing woman,” Boltinhouse said.

The former titleholder was asked whether she thought being conservative automatically disqualifies someone from the pageant world. Her answer reflected the free-speech values many Americans believe are under attack.

“I believe that everyone has a right to say what they want to say and feel the way they want to feel,” she said.

When pressed on whether her support for President Donald Trump played a role in the decision, Boltinhouse admitted she simply doesn’t know. The organization never gave her clear answers.

“I don’t know. I don’t know. All I can say from the information that I have today and what I believe and I think is honestly I don’t know,” Boltinhouse said.

“I wasn’t really given anything.”

Despite everything, Boltinhouse says she forgives the organization. She hopes her experience will inspire other women to stand firm in their beliefs, no matter the consequences.

“Hopefully see me as an example,” she said.

“To always stand for what you believe, no matter what, no matter where, no matter what you do.”

“I speak to the women that even are not conservative, that they have the right to speak the way that you feel, no matter what platform, no matter what belief system that you may have,” she added.

The first runner-up in the state competition, Myla Hadley, will now represent North Carolina at the national pageant. Brodeur said she would compete “with our full confidence and our support.”

In his earlier statement, Brodeur claimed the decision was made in consultation with Boltinhouse, her state directors, and the Miss USA Organization. He also said the organization doesn’t believe in personally attacking Boltinhouse, even as they publicly accused her of conduct they refuse to detail.

“There is a young woman at the center of this,” Brodeur said.

“She has been named, examined, and judged in public in a way that most of us would not survive, and she is still a human being with a family, a future, and a life ahead of her that is longer than this part of her journey.”

“I have never believed that accountability requires cruelty, or that holding a line means enjoying the fall of the person who crossed it,” he continued.

The Miss USA Organization has not responded to requests for further comment.

This story isn’t just about a beauty pageant. It’s about whether Americans can still hold traditional beliefs without losing their livelihoods. When institutions punish people for their faith and values but won’t even say what they did wrong, that’s not accountability — it’s intimidation.
