Officials say the crackdown aims to restore integrity to a program that millions of struggling Americans depend on for basic groceries.

“We will not tolerate those who seek to exploit programs designed to help the most vulnerable among us,” the USDA stated in its announcement.

Investigators are moving quickly to suspend or permanently ban the 170 retailers from accepting SNAP benefits, cutting off their ability to continue the alleged schemes.

The fraud involves store owners accepting EBT cards in exchange for cash at a discount, allowing recipients to pocket money instead of buying food as the program intends.

Many of the targeted stores are small bodegas and convenience shops located in working-class neighborhoods where food stamp usage runs high.

Federal agents are now reviewing transaction data and conducting surprise inspections to root out additional bad actors still operating in the city.
