President Trump ordered signs placed outside the Smithsonian Museum of American History directing visitors to truthful accounts of our nation’s story — a direct challenge to the woke revisionism plaguing our institutions.
The White House released a scathing report accusing the Smithsonian of pushing divisive political narratives instead of celebrating American greatness, and now Trump’s taking action on federal property surrounding the museum.
Museum directors scrambled to defend their exhibits during congressional testimony, but taxpayers shouldn’t fund institutions that undermine the country that pays their salaries.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday directing his administration to install signs outside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The signs will point visitors toward what the White House calls accurate information about America’s past.

The order instructs the National Park Service to place signs on the sidewalks outside the museum. Those signs will reference a White House report released on Independence Day that criticized how the Smithsonian presents American history.

Trump also ordered the creation of a temporary exhibit designed to correct what his administration considers false or misleading historical information inside the museum.

The move follows a damning report from Trump’s Domestic Policy Council. That report accused the Smithsonian and its National Museum of American History of failing to present history in a way that inspires unity and reflects the greatness of our republic.

Because the Smithsonian operates independently from the executive branch, Trump can’t directly fire museum leadership or force exhibit changes. So instead, the order targets federal property outside the museum — sidewalks maintained by the National Park Service that fall squarely under federal jurisdiction.

National Museum of American History Director Anthea M. Hartig defended the museum during congressional testimony this week. But her defense rang hollow to lawmakers demanding accountability.

“As we continue to fact check the report, we unwaveringly attest that it does not fairly or accurately characterize the full body of work at the museum,” Hartig told Congress. “There is always room for improvement. But I also know the beauty and the inspiration and the expertise that lies in our collections, our exhibits, and our programming.”

Friday’s order builds on Trump’s broader campaign to reshape the Smithsonian’s exhibits and end taxpayer-funded America-bashing.

Back in March, Trump signed an executive order directing the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents to eliminate what the administration called improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology from the institution’s museums. That was just the opening salvo.

The White House has since taken particular aim at the National Museum of American History’s “Entertainment Nation” exhibit. Administration officials argue the displays about American pop culture frame the nation’s history through a political lens rather than celebrating its achievements.

White House official Lindsey Halligan made the administration’s position crystal clear.

“American taxpayers should not be funding institutions that undermine our country or promote one-sided, divisive political narratives.”

When initially confronted, the Smithsonian said it was conducting a review of museum content. The institution claimed it remained committed to rigorous scholarship, unbiased research, and factual presentation of history.

But words are cheap. Trump’s taking action.

The Smithsonian is overseen by a Board of Regents that includes Vice President JD Vance, Chief Justice John Roberts, members of Congress, and citizen regents. The institution receives roughly two-thirds of its approximately one billion dollar annual budget through federal appropriations — your tax dollars at work.

Why It Matters

For too long, elite institutions have used federal funding to push narratives that tear down rather than build up. Working Americans deserve museums that honor the sacrifices and triumphs that built this country, not exhibits designed to make our kids ashamed of their heritage. Trump’s sending a message: if you take taxpayer money, you answer to taxpayers — not to coastal academics with axes to grind.
