President Donald Trump delivered a stark warning to Iran on Tuesday, making crystal clear that military action remains on the table if negotiations between Washington and Tehran fall apart again. Speaking with unwavering resolve, Trump told the American people exactly where things stand.

“If they back out again, they’re going to get hit really hard,” Trump told Trace Gallagher. “They know that. They understand that. I have no choice. They can’t have a nuclear weapon. It’s very simple.”

Trump confirmed military strikes are still very much an option if diplomacy fails.

“The hard hit is yet to come, and hopefully we won’t have to use it,” he said during the interview.

The president’s comments came just days after he called off a planned military operation against Iran that would have been the largest American strike since World War II. Trump paused the attack after Tehran and several Middle Eastern countries begged for more time to negotiate over reopening the Strait of Hormuz and shutting down Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

“We were going to a tremendous attack, the biggest since World War II, and they called me and said very politely, ‘Please, can we talk? Can we talk?’ And I said, ‘Yes, we can talk. Let’s get it done,'” Trump explained.

Earlier this week, Trump said a deal to reopen the critical shipping lane and stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions was “imminent.”

Iranian officials have repeatedly denied holding direct talks with the United States, claiming negotiations are happening through mediators in Oman. Reports indicate that Iranian and Omani officials have made significant progress toward reopening the strait, though talks continue.

Trump described Tuesday’s negotiations as “very good,” despite Iran’s public denials that any direct conversations are taking place.

“They don’t like to admit that, but, well, you know, it’s a little bit disconcerting,” he said.

“It’s just such a lie,” Trump added.

“But it doesn’t matter. That’s talk. The only thing that matters is action. And they want to make a deal. We’ll see what happens. If they don’t make a deal, it’s going to be too bad.”

When asked how long he’d give Iran before walking away from negotiations, Trump made clear he’s not operating on anyone’s timeline but America’s.

“I have plenty of time,” he said.

The president slammed previous administrations for failing to deal with Iran’s nuclear threat and once again ripped apart the disastrous nuclear agreement negotiated under Barack Obama.

“It should have been done by many presidents over many years, and it wasn’t, and I’m doing it,” Trump said. “Obama was taken to the cleaners.”

Trump has repeatedly called this latest round of negotiations Iran’s “last chance” to avoid devastating US military action. Negotiators are initially focusing on reopening the Strait of Hormuz before tackling Tehran’s nuclear weapons program.
