The Trump administration just pulled the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to the United States as tensions between Washington and the South American nation reach a boiling point.

“We communicated continually with the Brazilian government for weeks and have given the Brazilian government every opportunity to do the right thing, yet they have continually delayed and obfuscated,” a State Department spokesperson said.

Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti hasn’t been kicked out of the country entirely, but if she leaves American soil, she’ll have to reapply for a visa just like everyone else. The message is clear: no special treatment for countries that don’t play fair.

The diplomatic standoff started after Brazil denied visas to two American diplomats last month and stalled on approving former Florida House Speaker Danny Perez, President Trump’s nominee to serve as ambassador to Brazil.

“This is a reciprocal action,” the spokesperson said, making it clear that Brazil started this fight by blocking our people first.

The State Department warned that more diplomatic consequences could follow if Brazil keeps dragging its feet or outright refuses to approve Perez. Viotti could get back to work if Brazil does the right thing and approves Trump’s ambassador pick.

Last month, Brazil blocked Riley Barnes, the State Department’s assistant Secretary of State for democracy, human rights and labor, along with one of Barnes’ top aides from entering the country. These weren’t rabble-rousers — they were planning a routine visit focused on election integrity, religious freedom, and freedom of expression.

The timing is suspicious. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a leftist, is facing Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro — son of former conservative President Jair Bolsonaro — in the October 4 election. This visa revocation is just the latest in a series of tough actions the Trump administration has taken against Brazil. The president has slapped tariffs of up to 37.5% on thousands of Brazilian exports and designated two major Brazilian drug-trafficking groups as foreign terrorist organizations.

For decades, America let countries like Brazil walk all over us diplomatically while their drug gangs poisoned our communities and their trade policies hurt American workers. Those days are over.
