Republican South Carolina Sen. Darline Graham has advanced to a runoff election scheduled for August 25. She’ll face off against Republican South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman in what’s shaping up to be a competitive race for the GOP Senate nomination.

Graham currently holds the seat after being appointed to complete the term of her late brother, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. At the time results came in Tuesday night, she led Norman by nine percentage points.

The runoff became necessary because neither candidate managed to secure the majority needed to clinch the nomination outright. Both campaigns now have several weeks to make their case to South Carolina Republican voters.

Graham’s appointment gave her the advantages of incumbency and name recognition. Norman brings his own credentials as a sitting House member with an established conservative voting record.
