Unlicensed food trucks have taken over prime spots around the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and the problem persists at the Great American State Fair. A small group of operators runs most of these illegal trucks as a coordinated network, according to Washingtonian.

This isn’t just a few rogue hot dog carts. It’s an organized operation.

Longtime licensed food truck operator Zack Graybill walked around the National Mall recently and witnessed the chaos firsthand. What he found was a lawless free-for-all where unlicensed vendors operate with impunity, squeezing out legitimate businesses that play by the rules and pay their fees.

Licensed vendors who have invested thousands of dollars in permits, health inspections, and insurance are being shoved aside. Meanwhile, the illegal operators pay nothing, follow no health codes, and face virtually no enforcement.

But it gets worse.

Violence has erupted as the illegal network defends its turf. One licensed vendor reported being physically attacked when he tried to set up in a spot an unlicensed operator claimed as his own.

“He came and stab me,” the vendor said, describing the brutal encounter.

Let that sink in. A legal business owner was stabbed by an illegal operator — in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol — and the city has done essentially nothing to stop it.

The unlicensed trucks are reportedly part of a coordinated network, with a handful of operators controlling multiple vehicles and rotating them through high-traffic areas. They undercut legal vendors on price because they have no overhead, no permits, and no accountability.

For licensed operators like Graybill, it’s infuriating. He followed every rule, paid every fee, and invested in his business the right way. Now he’s competing against criminals who face zero consequences.

DC officials claim they’re “aware of the issue” and “monitoring the situation.” In other words, they’re doing nothing. The city that hosts millions of tourists every year — the nation’s capital — has allowed a food truck mafia to take over some of the most iconic public spaces in America.

This is what happens when enforcement disappears. When cities stop holding people accountable for breaking the law, chaos fills the vacuum. Criminals thrive, honest people suffer, and the rule of law becomes a punchline.

Licensed vendors are begging for help. They want the city to enforce existing regulations, crack down on illegal operators, and restore order. It’s not a complicated ask — just enforce the law.

But in a city run by Democrats who prioritize ideology over common sense, even that seems too much to hope for. The same officials who demand every American follow endless rules and regulations apparently have no problem letting criminals run wild when it’s politically inconvenient to stop them.

The irony is rich. Washington, D.C. — the city that creates laws for the entire country — can’t even enforce basic business regulations on its own streets.
