A Massachusetts Democrat lawmaker is facing serious federal charges for allegedly defrauding COVID-19 relief programs out of more than $700,000. State Representative Francisco Paulino has been indicted by federal prosecutors for pandemic-era fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

Paulino pleaded not guilty to the charges. But the allegations paint a picture of a politician allegedly helping himself to relief funds while hardworking Americans struggled to keep food on the table during the lockdowns.

This is the same crowd that lectured us about staying home, wearing masks, and sacrificing for the common good. Meanwhile, they allegedly had their hands in the cookie jar, scooping up taxpayer dollars meant for people who desperately needed help.

The indictment accuses Paulino of scheming to pocket over $700,000 from programs designed to keep small businesses afloat and families fed during one of the most difficult periods in recent American history. While Main Street shuttered and parents worried about making rent, politicians like Paulino allegedly saw an opportunity.

Federal prosecutors don’t bring these cases lightly. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has been cracking down on pandemic fraud, but it’s telling how many of these cases involve people in positions of power and public trust.
