The powerful floodwaters also destroyed the park’s only water pipeline, creating a critical infrastructure emergency at one of America’s most iconic landmarks.

The flooding struck Bright Angel Canyon on Saturday with little warning. Park officials scrambled to evacuate more than 60 visitors from Phantom Ranch as the raging waters surged through the canyon.
