Norway’s King Harald died Friday at 89, the Royal House of Norway announced. The monarch’s passing marks the end of an era for the Scandinavian nation.
“It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away,” the royal palace said in a statement.
“King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet Friday 28 August at 6:35 AM,” the statement continued. The king’s final moments came surrounded by family in Norway’s capital.
Harald’s son, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, will succeed him. The transition follows centuries of Norwegian royal tradition, even as modern constitutional monarchy has evolved significantly from the absolute rule of medieval times.
King Harald’s reign saw Norway navigate major global changes while maintaining its distinct national character and traditions. His leadership style emphasized accessibility and connection with ordinary Norwegians.

“Quiet Dignity” Really? Screw that! We don’t WANT Kings & Royalty & ONE FAMILY RULE FOREVER here. And just WHO decides THAT lottery, of one specific family ruling forever, deserved or not? America is America precisely because we DON’T do that here! There is nothing dignified about one family being deemed better or more special than another family just because they were born. We are the land of the FREE. Thank God!!!

You don’t know much. The monarchy controls nothing. The parliament in Norway does. Yes, much of the taxpayers money in Norway does go to the royalty but they preserve the past by all the citizens of Norway wanting it. It is the parliament that has decided the fate of their citizens which has changed drastically over the last 50 years or so and most of the citizens living there and are true Norwegian are not happy.

No back-stabbing in Norway??? You must have missed the political contests there! You must have missed the fierce political upheaval when Harald and then Haakon tried to marry women who were–wait for it–that dreaded, despised group “commoners.” Norway’s kings are elevated because of their class at the top of the social pyramid with commoners being at the bottom. Our Declaration of Independence put an end to the caste system of the Eoropean world. The result–the people of our country have been freed to create the greatest nation on earth. Able to rescue Norway in two world wars. Norways kings are expensive symbols now with no real power. We prefer symbols like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Lets give some credit where it’s due, Norway now will have an orderly transition, NOT like the political Football game that’s ongoing in Great Britan.

We need to focus on the USA and not judge another country. We here in the USA are heading for a dictatorship which is far worse than a democracy of any kind that also has a celebrated monarchy. I do say though that the democracy Norway has now is going in the wrong direction.
