Two recent mass shootings — one near a pizza restaurant in Tucson, Arizona, and another at a food festival in Seattle, Washington — occurred in cities with a documented pattern of leniency toward criminals who illegally use firearms. Nine people were wounded in the July 19 shooting near Empire Pizza and Pub in Tucson, while three people were killed and four others wounded in Seattle.

The pattern is impossible to ignore. Both cities have track records of soft-on-crime policies that give repeat gun offenders minimal consequences.

In Tucson, court records show prosecutors routinely reduce charges for illegal firearm possession, often pleading felonies down to misdemeanors. Judges frequently hand down probation instead of prison time, even for offenders with multiple violations.

Seattle’s approach has been similarly lenient. The city’s progressive prosecutors have embraced “restorative justice” models that prioritize treatment programs over incarceration, even for violent offenders caught with illegal weapons.

This stands in stark contrast to how these same jurisdictions treat law-abiding gun owners. Legal concealed carry permit holders face aggressive enforcement, while criminals caught red-handed receive understanding and second chances.

The disconnect couldn’t be clearer. Honest citizens navigate complex permit systems and strict regulations. Criminals ignore the laws entirely — and face little real punishment when caught.

Crime statistics back up what residents already know. Cities that go easy on gun crime see more gun crime. It’s cause and effect, not rocket science.

Meanwhile, residents in these communities live with the consequences. Families avoid certain neighborhoods after dark. Business owners install security cameras and hire armed guards.

The victims in Tucson and Seattle deserve better. So do millions of Americans living in cities where criminals receive more consideration than law-abiding citizens.
