January 1, California Governor Signs Law SHIELDING Immigration Fraud From Public View

Wyatt’s Take
- California just passed a law making it harder to investigate immigration service fraud — hiding corruption behind ‘privacy’ claims
- Republicans say this bill is designed to silence one journalist who exposed massive taxpayer-funded scams
- Newsom’s signature protects shady operators over hardworking Americans footing the bill
California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 2624 into law. The new measure is being called the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” by Republican lawmakers who warn it will make exposing fraud nearly impossible.
The law gives sweeping privacy protections to immigration service providers. Critics say it’s a shield for corruption, not legitimate businesses.
🚨 It’s official the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” AB 2624 is now law in California. This bill was created by the Attorney General’s WIFE after I exposed widespread fraud inside immigrant communities in America and now they want to penalize journalists and citizens for looking into… pic.twitter.com/R1thgDzd8A

GOP representatives argue the bill targets one specific journalist — Nick Shirley — who has documented widespread fraud in California’s immigration services industry. His investigations revealed taxpayer dollars being funneled into questionable operations with little oversight.
Now, that kind of reporting could become illegal under the new statute. Service providers can claim privacy protections to block public scrutiny, even when public money is involved.
Republicans slammed the measure as government overreach designed to protect political allies. They point out that transparency laws exist to prevent exactly this kind of abuse — hiding waste and fraud from the people who pay for it.
Newsom’s office defended the bill as necessary to protect vulnerable immigrant communities from harassment. But opponents say the real vulnerability is for taxpayers who will never know where their money goes.
The law takes effect immediately. Immigration service providers across California can now invoke privacy claims to avoid answering basic questions about how they spend public funds.
Conservative watchdog groups are already promising legal challenges. They argue the First Amendment protects investigative journalism, especially when it exposes government-funded corruption.
Wyatt Matters
When politicians pass laws to hide what they’re doing with your money, it’s not about privacy — it’s about power. California just made it harder for regular Americans to find out how billions in taxpayer dollars get spent on immigration services. If there’s nothing to hide, why are they hiding it? This is exactly the kind of swamp behavior that makes working families distrust government. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, and California just pulled down the shades.
