January 1, Pittsburgh’s Downtown Comeback Draws Big Money and Bigger Stakes

Wyatt’s Take
- PNC CEO Bill Demchak pledged $5 million to help bring the NFL draft to Pittsburgh.
- Local leaders are also funding a new homeless shelter and cleanup efforts around the city.
- The 2026 NFL draft is expected to draw nearly 800,000 visitors and spotlight Pittsburgh’s revival.
Pittsburgh was hit hard by bad policy, the pandemic, and a downtown decline that left many residents frustrated.
Now business leaders are stepping up with private money to restore order and pride in the city.
Bill Demchak returned to his hometown in 2002 and saw a place that felt empty and unsafe after dark.
He spent years helping build a stronger financial and healthcare hub before a new slide set in.
“We went hard at this homeless situation and identified available beds and identified affordable housing,” Demchak said.
The Steelers helped hold the city together during the economic collapse of the 1970s.
The draft is now expected to put Pittsburgh’s architecture and hard-working spirit back in the national spotlight.
“It’s about our employees,” Demchak said.
“It has to be a fun place for our employees to want to come do their job and live and raise their families,” he said.
