January 1, Baseball’s Latest Mystery Play Sparks Umpire Timeout

That was something that you will not see again,” one announcer remarked as the stadium tried to figure out where the ball went.
Under current MLB rules, a legal catch must be made with the hand or glove, meaning the jersey trap cannot count for an out.
Some fans argue this is a contradiction since a ball hitting a batter’s jersey counts as a hit-by-pitch, but the league keeps the rules distinct.
This incident follows other bizarre moments in the sport, including umpires making historically bad calls during recent Brewers games.
While the freak play gave the A’s a base runner, the Mariners ultimately secured a 5-4 victory at the end of the night.

Hard-working Americans appreciate a game built on clear rules and fair play, even when those rules lead to a head-scratching moment during a tough game. It is a reminder that even in a world of high-tech replays, the unpredictable nature of life can still catch everyone off guard.

That is a ridiculous conclusion…. we’ve seen trapped balls against helmets, uniforms and the like, and then called and out when they controlled the ball in a mitt or hand…. he pulled it out of his jersey…. these umpires always seem to go to the absurd.
