January 1, Olympic Curler Slams ICE Actions in Minnesota

Wyatt’s Take
- A U.S. Olympic curler spoke out against ICE during the Winter Games.
- The athlete criticized immigration enforcement actions back home in Minnesota.
- He praised protesters and questioned the federal agents’ work.
A member of Team USA’s curling team has taken his moment in the Olympic spotlight to attack immigration policies back home. Rich Ruohonen, 54, from Minnesota, used a press event to criticize the efforts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in his state.
“I’d like to say I’m proud to be here to represent Team USA, and to represent our country. But we’d be remiss if we didn’t at least mention what’s going on in Minnesota,” Ruohonen said.
Federal agents in Minneapolis have been working to take criminal illegal aliens off the streets, many of whom are wanted for serious felony offenses. Their job has faced pushback from anti-ICE activists trying to interfere with arrests.
“I am a lawyer, as you know. We have a constitution, and it allows us freedom of speech,” Ruohonen continued. “It protects us from unreasonable searches and seizures. And makes it that we have to have probable cause to be pulled over. What’s happening in Minnesota is wrong. There’s no shades of grey. It’s clear.”
Ruohonen offered strong words in support of the protesters. “I really love what’s been happening there now. With people coming out, showing the love, the compassion, the integrity and respect for others that they don’t know, and helping them out,” he said.
He closed by saying, “We love Minnesota for that … We love our country. We’re playing for the U.S. We’re playing for each other, we’re playing for our family and our friends that sacrificed so much to get here today.”
He also suggested Team USA is representing those who stand up to immigration enforcement. “What the Olympics means is excellence, respect, friendship. We all, I think, exemplify that. We are playing for the people of Minnesota and the people around the country who share those same values, that compassion, that love, and that respect.”
Some folks think politics should stay out of sports. What do you say? Tell us what side you’re standing on.
Wyatt Matters
Everyday folks in the heartland know the importance of law, order, and protecting their communities. It matters who stands up for our values and who tries to tear them down from the world stage.

Using even temporary notoriety to share one’s personal views to international audiences is a no-win situation. Touting himself as a lawyer, Mr. Ruohonen should know better. Athletes supported by private and government funding deserve their 15-minutes of fame to highlight their and their team’s accomplishments. Rather than that he chose to criticize law enforcement that the majority of his fellow Minnesotans support. For good or ill, that will be what people remember.

Mr. Ruohonen does have the right, per our Constitution, to speak his mind. But I would rather he, as well as the other athletes, state that on US soil. If the US is so bad, why do so many people want to come here? And I agree that athletes should stick to talking about their sport and leave politics out of the conversation. When a reporter asks what do they think about what is going on in America come back with, “no politics, next question”.

Remove him from the team! Send him back and make him repay all the monies for all the training, housing, food, travel, transportation, clothing supplied plua any other monies expended on him. He has rights to his own opinion but the GAMES are not the venue to broadcast his personl feelings, he is supposed to be a team member representing the USA>

Any athlete from any country who thinks they should have carte blanche to make their involvement in the Olympics also a political statement should be removed from the games, have their participation stricken from the Olympic record, and forfeit any medals they may have won. There is a time and a place for politics…the Olympics is not it.

Idiot. This is the equivalent of going to a work convention and complaining about a disagreement you are having with your wife and airing all of your dirty laundry in front of strangers.
Can you do it? Of course you can. However should you do it?
There are consequences and repercussions for bad decisions.
